On The "Israel Problem"

The following is an excerpt from a thread I participated in on a great little community site. You may not be able to understand some of it because it references previous posts in the thread, but that effect should be negligable.

To start, any source on the conflicts in Israel WILL BE BIASED. The arguments of Clavis, Lefen and Stump lead into one of my strongest beliefs about the "Israel Problem" and two possible solutions to this problem.

The "problem" of the creation of the state Israel goes back much much further than the post WWII UN decision to give the Jewish people a state. "Israel" is a "Holy Land" to three major world religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This little piece of land has been fought over for literally thousands of years as a result of these three religious claims to the land and because of the fertility of that land and its prime placement in the Mediterranean.

Stump, the Ottoman Empire was a Muslim empire and it did rule over the area that is now known as Israel.

Lefen, I have been to Israel and the Muslim population there is far from "brutalized". There are areas that are primarily Muslim and areas that are Jewish. Yes, the stateless "Palestinians" are marginalized, but they have chosen to protest in a violent manner instead of following the path of Gandhi and passive aggression. I understand their anger, but I disagree with their methods.

Clavis, you have no idea what most Muslims are like. Have you ever visited a Muslim theocracy? If so then I am very surprised that you would even hint at such a horrible idea. Your beliefs about Muslims are poorly formed at best. One could just as easily replace "crazy ass Christians that hate Jews and Muslims" with your comment about "jew/christian hating Muslims". Fundamentalists (read, extremists) are a problem for every major religion even Jews. I lived in Saudi Arabia for ten years and have seen great acts of kindness in that theocracy as well as great acts of, for lack of a better word, "evil". However, I have visited other Muslim states such as Turkey, where minarets and steeples rise side by side, with no problems at all. Also, if you have ever studied anything about the Koran, you'd know that all people of the Jewish faith that existed before Muhammad’s "revelation" are considered to be MUSLIMS. Also note that the Koran states that Jesus (usually mentioned as "the son of Mary") was a great prophet. The Koran is a book much like the Bible or the Tanak, which can be interpreted in various ways. Getting rid of Muslims is not the answer. You would just promote Christians to the rank of "craziest fundamentalists around". Remember the Oklahoma bombing was perpetrated by a WHITE AMERICAN CHRISTIAN. I believe that the real problem as far as religion goes are the fundamentalists not the average people of faith.

Lefen, I do agree that the current Israeli conflict is not as simple as Jews vs. Terrorists. It all goes back to the LAND that is now called "Israel".

For lack of a better solution to the "Israel Problem", I suggest that the UN create a neutral state in Israel's place. Of course the UN would actually have to have power or usefulness at any level, to do this for it to work. If the Holy Land for three different religions is occupied by any one of the three religions there will always be conflict.

The only other solution I can think of is to just completely obliterate all that is considered holy in that area, a well placed nuclear missile would do well, the fallout alone would keep the land inhabitable for at least hundreds of years. This act would have to be done by someone, or country, that is willing to be destroyed itself, and cannot be seen as one religion against another. North Korea might be a good candidate for this. They are not viewed as a religious state and they are demonized in almost every country around the world. China and Russia would quickly dissosociate themselves from North Korea if they perpetrated this act without any reason or provocation. This way there is no more holy land. No one could occupy it and the conflicts over that little piece of land would cease.

However, this is really just a corollary of the post WWII idea (mostly brought about in the areas that had been completely destroyed) that the most beautiful solution to the "human problem" would be a complete nuclear destruction of the entire planet.

I have yet to hear any better or more viable proposition.

I hope to Xenu they do challenge Big Telco. Someone has to and Google just might have enough money to do it. Its a horrid shame that this administration has allowed the Net Neutrality laws to fall by the wayside. I don't know if anyone else has noticed a bit of a slow donw in their home internet when it comes to google searches and using some of the more complicated Firefox extensions, but I have. It s almost as if someone is cutting down my bandwidth when going to Google, or simply because I am using Firefox. Could IE have a thumb in this pie as well? I don't know, but it seems to surf with no problems at all, except for when using advanced Google searches. If you have been experiencing the same thing, please leave a comment. Let me know if I am completely wrong or if I may be on to something.

Either way the breakup of the Big Telco's a couple of years ago was an absolute failure. Verizone and At&t now own everythin again. What a complete failure of government anti-trust anti-monopoly laws.

Former AT&T technician Mark Klein is the key witness in the Electronic Frontier Foundation's class-action lawsuit against the company, which alleges that AT&T illegally cooperated in an illegal National Security Agency domestic-surveillance program.

In this recently surfaced statement, Klein details his discovery of an alleged surveillance operation in an AT&T office in San Francisco, and offers his interpretation of company documents that he believes support his case.

For its part, AT&T is asking a federal judge to keep those documents out of court, and to order the EFF to return them to the company. Here Wired News presents Klein's statement in its entirety, along with select pages from the AT&T documents.

AT&T's Implementation of NSA Spying on American Citizens

I wrote the following document in 2004 when it became clear to me that AT&T, at the behest of the National Security Agency, had illegally installed secret computer gear designed to spy on internet traffic. At the time I thought this was an outgrowth of the notorious Total Information Awareness program which was attacked by defenders of civil liberties. But now it's been revealed by The New York Times that the spying program is vastly bigger and was directly authorized by President Bush, as he himself has now admitted, in flagrant violation of specific statutes and constitutional protections for civil liberties. I am presenting this information to facilitate the dismantling of this dangerous Orwellian project.

AT&T Deploys Government Spy Gear on WorldNet Network

In 2003 AT&T built "secret rooms" hidden deep in the bowels of its central offices in various cities, housing computer gear for a government spy operation which taps into the company's popular WorldNet service and the entire internet. These installations enable the government to look at every individual message on the internet and analyze exactly what people are doing. Documents showing the hardwire installation in San Francisco suggest that there are similar locations being installed in numerous other cities.

The physical arrangement, the timing of its construction, the government-imposed secrecy surrounding it, and other factors all strongly suggest that its origins are rooted in the Defense Department's Total Information Awareness (TIA) program which brought forth vigorous protests from defenders of constitutionally protected civil liberties last year:

"As the director of the effort, Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter, has described the system in Pentagon documents and in speeches, it will provide intelligence analysts and law enforcement officials with instant access to information from internet mail and calling records to credit card and banking transactions and travel documents, without a search warrant." The New York Times, 9 November 2002

To mollify critics, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) spokesmen have repeatedly asserted that they are only conducting "research" using "artificial synthetic data" or information from "normal DOD intelligence channels" and hence there are "no U.S. citizen privacy implications" (Department of Defense, Office of the Inspector General report on TIA, December 12, 2003). They also changed the name of the program to "Terrorism Information Awareness" to make it more politically palatable. But feeling the heat, Congress made a big show of allegedly cutting off funding for TIA in late 2003, and the political fallout resulted in Adm. Poindexter's abrupt resignation last August. However, the fine print reveals that Congress eliminated funding only for "the majority of the TIA components," allowing several "components" to continue (DOD, ibid). The essential hardware elements of a TIA-type spy program are being surreptitiously slipped into "real world" telecommunications offices.

In San Francisco the "secret room" is Room 641A at 611 Folsom Street, the site of a large SBC phone building, three floors of which are occupied by AT&T. High-speed fiber-optic circuits come in on the 8th floor and run down to the 7th floor where they connect to routers for AT&T's WorldNet service, part of the latter's vital "Common Backbone." In order to snoop on these circuits, a special cabinet was installed and cabled to the "secret room" on the 6th floor to monitor the information going through the circuits. (The location code of the cabinet is 070177.04, which denotes the 7th floor, aisle 177 and bay 04.) The "secret room" itself is roughly 24-by-48 feet, containing perhaps a dozen cabinets including such equipment as Sun servers and two Juniper routers, plus an industrial-size air conditioner.

The normal work force of unionized technicians in the office are forbidden to enter the "secret room," which has a special combination lock on the main door. The telltale sign of an illicit government spy operation is the fact that only people with security clearance from the National Security Agency can enter this room. In practice this has meant that only one management-level technician works in there. Ironically, the one who set up the room was laid off in late 2003 in one of the company's endless "downsizings," but he was quickly replaced by another.

Plans for the "secret room" were fully drawn up by December 2002, curiously only four months after Darpa started awarding contracts for TIA. One 60-page document, identified as coming from "AT&T Labs Connectivity & Net Services" and authored by the labs' consultant Mathew F. Casamassima, is titled Study Group 3, LGX/Splitter Wiring, San Francisco and dated 12/10/02. (See sample PDF 1-4.) This document addresses the special problem of trying to spy on fiber-optic circuits. Unlike copper wire circuits which emit electromagnetic fields that can be tapped into without disturbing the circuits, fiber-optic circuits do not "leak" their light signals. In order to monitor such communications, one has to physically cut into the fiber somehow and divert a portion of the light signal to see the information.

This problem is solved with "splitters" which literally split off a percentage of the light signal so it can be examined. This is the purpose of the special cabinet referred to above: Circuits are connected into it, the light signal is split into two signals, one of which is diverted to the "secret room." The cabinet is totally unnecessary for the circuit to perform -- in fact it introduces problems since the signal level is reduced by the splitter -- its only purpose is to enable a third party to examine the data flowing between sender and recipient on the internet.

The above-referenced document includes a diagram (PDF 3) showing the splitting of the light signal, a portion of which is diverted to "SG3 Secure Room," i.e., the so-called "Study Group" spy room. Another page headlined "Cabinet Naming" (PDF 2) lists not only the "splitter" cabinet but also the equipment installed in the "SG3" room, including various Sun devices, and Juniper M40e and M160 "backbone" routers. PDF file 4 shows one of many tables detailing the connections between the "splitter" cabinet on the 7th floor (location 070177.04) and a cabinet in the "secret room" on the 6th floor (location 060903.01). Since the San Francisco "secret room" is numbered 3, the implication is that there are at least several more in other cities (Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego are some of the rumored locations), which likely are spread across the United States.

One of the devices in the "Cabinet Naming" list is particularly revealing as to the purpose of the "secret room": a Narus STA 6400. Narus is a 7-year-old company which, because of its particular niche, appeals not only to businessmen (it is backed by AT&T, JP Morgan and Intel, among others) but also to police, military and intelligence officials. Last November 13-14, for instance, Narus was the "Lead Sponsor" for a technical conference held in McLean, Virginia, titled "Intelligence Support Systems for Lawful Interception and Internet Surveillance." Police officials, FBI and DEA agents, and major telecommunications companies eager to cash in on the "war on terror" had gathered in the hometown of the CIA to discuss their special problems. Among the attendees were AT&T, BellSouth, MCI, Sprint and Verizon. Narus founder, Dr. Ori Cohen, gave a keynote speech. So what does the Narus STA 6400 do?

"The (Narus) STA Platform consists of stand-alone traffic analyzers that collect network and customer usage information in real time directly from the message.... These analyzers sit on the message pipe into the ISP (internet service provider) cloud rather than tap into each router or ISP device" (Telecommunications magazine, April 2000). A Narus press release (1 Dec., 1999) also boasts that its Semantic Traffic Analysis (STA) technology "captures comprehensive customer usage data ... and transforms it into actionable information.... (It) is the only technology that provides complete visibility for all internet applications."

To implement this scheme, WorldNet's high-speed data circuits already in service had to be rerouted to go through the special "splitter" cabinet. This was addressed in another document of 44 pages from AT&T Labs, titled "SIMS, Splitter Cut-In and Test Procedure," dated 01/13/03 (PDF 5-6). "SIMS" is an unexplained reference to the secret room. Part of this reads as follows:

"A WMS (work) Ticket will be issued by the AT&T Bridgeton Network Operation Center (NOC) to charge time for performing the work described in this procedure document....
"This procedure covers the steps required to insert optical splitters into select live Common Backbone (CBB) OC3, OC12 and OC48 optical circuits."

The NOC referred to is in Bridgeton, Missouri, and controls WorldNet operations. (As a sign that government spying goes hand-in-hand with union-busting, the entire (Communication Workers of America) Local 6377 which had jurisdiction over the Bridgeton NOC was wiped out in early 2002 when AT&T fired the union work force and later rehired them as nonunion "management" employees.) The cut-in work was performed in 2003, and since then new circuits are connected through the "splitter" cabinet.

Another "Cut-In and Test Procedure" document dated January 24, 2003, provides diagrams of how AT&T Core Network circuits were to be run through the "splitter" cabinet (PDF 7). One page lists the circuit IDs of key Peering Links which were "cut-in" in February 2003 (PDF 8), including ConXion, Verio, XO, Genuity, Qwest, PAIX, Allegiance, AboveNet, Global Crossing, C&W, UUNET, Level 3, Sprint, Telia, PSINet and Mae West. By the way, Mae West is one of two key internet nodal points in the United States (the other, Mae East, is in Vienna, Virginia). It's not just WorldNet customers who are being spied on -- it's the entire internet.

The next logical question is, what central command is collecting the data sent by the various "secret rooms"? One can only make educated guesses, but perhaps the answer was inadvertently given in the DOD Inspector General's report (cited above):

"For testing TIA capabilities, Darpa and the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) created an operational research and development environment that uses real-time feedback. The main node of TIA is located at INSCOM (in Fort Belvoir, Virginia)…."

Among the agencies participating or planning to participate in the INSCOM "testing" are the "National Security Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, the DOD Counterintelligence Field Activity, the U.S. Strategic Command, the Special Operations Command, the Joint Forces Command and the Joint Warfare Analysis Center." There are also "discussions" going on to bring in "non-DOD federal agencies" such as the FBI.

This is the infrastructure for an Orwellian police state. It must be shut down!

I did make it to the final phase of the quest!!

Just got the email from sony, a bit later than 1pm EDT.

Oooh this is gonna be good. The special sneek peek of the film was kewl. I can't believe they actually filmed in the louvre?!?!?! Of course it can do nothing but fuel tourism, but the risk to the art was considerable.

Anyways, I am taking Friday off and seeing the earliest screening of the film in 2k digital projection on one of the largest screens in the world. Then I will have to gather all my gnosis around me and try to complete the challeges as fast a possible, once I start the final phase.

I can't wait to see what the five challenges are.

Anyways, this is gonna be fun. Hope all you other final phase folks have fun too.

You know, people ought to do things like this more often. The whole quest thing. Even if the prize is just as simple as a cryptex or some other bobble. It was really fun and its not just a net freeforall where bots and all that crap can bollox up the fun (ever try to get tix to a hot game or concert then you know what I'm sayin'). This quest took a smidge of wits and some time. That's all. Maybe that's just the RPG fan in me. But it was fun and I got my cryptex so I'm way past satisfied. I have always admired Nintendo for their niche market stratagy. They collect huge profits while Sony and Microsoft take HUGE hits on their consols to try and beat each other out of the market. Of course Nintendo's market share is way lower than Sony and Microsoft, but Nintendo isn't trying to get market share, they are trying to profit and they are succeeding. The DS light outsold both the PSP and the PS2 IN JAPAN when it first came out! Japan is supposed to be Sony's playground for profit.

Also, Nintendo has innovative fun ideas that are geared towards kids, but they welcome adult gamers as well. The Zelda game for the Cube sold millions of copies. And Soul Clibur 2 had Link as the special character, how sweet is that!!! Plus their DRM for the cube was almost unhackable, with a reverse spinning disk and Managed Copy Protection, plus the odd size, it took forever for someone to come up with a workaround.

If I had money to bet on a console for the next gen as far as profits, I'd bet on the Nintendo Wii (which now has a regular controller as well as the remote looking thingy). The PS3 is going to cost $800 plus, if and when it launches in the US. And the XBOX 360 was launched with major flaws like the cooling system and some pretty bad coding on their part. They are both going to take major hits on their consoles and on the whole HD vs BD thing. It costs $400 alone just to build the blue laser, now add the cost of the rest of the box and you can see how easy they will lose money trying to duke it out for market share.

I say three cheers for Nintendo!! I'm a PS2 man myself for now, but as far as next gen I'm going with Nintendo, the gaming co that started it all. (ok so pong was really the first video game per se, but Nintendo's NES made video games accesable and popular with/to the general population)

So todays puzzle was pretty easy. But I have one huge problem with it. I solved it, but the math doesn't work out on one part.

For one question they give say, "[#max possible#] to be exact" combinations, and the n part of nCr. Here's the problem, the max possible combos for the nCr is wrong.

You can't solve it mathmatically. You HAVE TO observe. OoooOOoooH *scary noises*

Good luck, hope I didn't spoil anything. I was just pissed wbout the math thing.

Ok so I have an old school iTrp for the regular size ipod. If this is just an antenna extension then one shoul be able to crack open the old iTrip and expose the 20gauge copper wire that serves as its antenna. Thusly skipping the mini USB connect part.(NOTE: I Haven't tried the next part...yet)

After doing that, You could take the exposed wire and either attache it to the 300 ohm to 70 ohm connector (do everything the same as the linked mod says, accept skip the the usb chosen wire part and connect the iTrip's exposed antenna directly.) You could skip the ohm connector all together but then you iTrip would have a permanant 2 foot coax sticking out of it, and that's no pretty.

Then follow the rest of the mod for the coax cable.

You could dremmel a hole in the iTrip and hot glue the ohm connector into that hole so you have a short fixed connection that won't stress the iTrip's antenna.

I will report back later on this.

One question thoug, what the FM transmitters really need is a pre signal amplifier. Essentially one would have to pull out the circuit board from the iTrip and figure out where to bypass the the signal circuit and solder in a set up of transistors and capasitors that would essentially boost the iTrips output to levels that the FCC wouldn't be happy about. However, I have no clue how to actually do this, as I am not a radio person or a circuit board person. I can't even solder very well!! Anyone got any bright ideas?
BTW- The old signal amplifier specs that have been floating around the net for a loooong time are pretty much useless. I put one together with a bread board and got only a smidge of boost, nothing to write home about.

Its like a CRT only instead of 1 electron gun there are 3 electron emitters for every pixel. Lightweight, true blacks, no "viewing angle", won't break when you dust the home, eventually cheaper. Beats LCD and Plasma, which CRT still beats BTW. Who wants to see the color black as a bluish area of hyper pixel noise? Not me.

So Maybe SED is the real deal, the "TRUE" next gen tech. We'll have to wait and see if they can hit that 100,000:1 contrast ration. Its still fixed pixel though :-( I hate fixed pixel. Maybe they'll get around that somehow too.

However, PHLACK seems to be pretty kewl. I don't know if it beats Auditor, but its another choice.

What would be really kewl is a site that lets you build your own distro and compiles it for you for download. I have no clue how this would be possible but it is a kewl idea.

I was just thinking to myself about having a child. Me and my girlfriend are pretty serious, which you probably could have deciphered from my musings on having a child, cause most 20-something dudes don't really think about having little germ factories. Anyways, I was thinking, which occurs on occaision, we put these kids in school and they don't know shit. They don't know what racism is, or what gay is, or even not to eat gum that is stuck to the floor, or at least I didn't.

Growing up for me was great because I didn't know those things. I didn't know those labels. However, I also didn't know the barrage of mental disorders that I was going to have either. At that point ignorance was bliss. I didn't even know death existed!

So, I didn't really become concious until I hit about 13, everything beofre that is a blur, probably because I have/had ADD AND Dyslexia. Everything was "whats that?" and "I don't know why I hit my best friend in the head with a large piece of metal??" (which I did feel really bad about, just for the record). But at 13 after years of special ed and ADD therapy, I finally become cognascient of stuff in general. Probably because I had finally figured out how to masturbate. I knew that rubbing around down there felt good but I didn't put 2 and 2 together and actually splooge until I was THIRTEEN!!! Is that a late blooming or what?

Anyways, I'm thinking about a child going to school and what I did in school and I'm thinking, we send these little retards of to school and they will learn shit. But what will they learn? Highschool for me was great. I was the star of most of the school plays, I ran track and I had several girlfriends. Here's where the mental disorders come in. I unknowingly had an obsessive compulsive disorder AND and anxiety disorder.

All this was actually brewing from the time when I was like 9 and coming home from grandma's house after the rents had picked us up after attending some galla event, and I'm sitting in the back seat of the station wagon...and I somehow make the leap from, thinking that I was going to be 9 forever to, I am going to die someday!! I dunno I saw my parents aging and my brother getting older and I kept moving up to the next grade and then BOOM, I realize that this procession of consecutive events will eventually lead to DEATH. I was inconsolable. That was my first panic attack thingy.

Back to the topic, I'm in high school and I'm doing plays and loving rock and roll and experimenting with a little weed and cigarettes and booze. From an outsiders point of view, I could have appeared to be gay. And this occured to me, like "Wait a second...what if I'm gay?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!" This plagued me for like a year. Even though I had perpetual girlfriends and had already started having sex with them. But the OCD in me says, "hold on a second now, musicals????" Now, I had never met a REAL gay person before. See in upper crust new england towns fags don't exactly grow on trees or if they do they really know how to blend in.

Back to the thoughts on my child. If I have a boy, I'm thinkin...Wait so we put these kids in school and say go have fun and they wind up in a musical. (pause) What are we exposing these children to?!!? They don't know that the winter musical, bye bye birdy, is gay as hell!! Should we put a surgeon generals warning on musicals "The Surgeon General says: If you are in this thing you might just be lookin like a faggot"?? Cause they don't know. I didn't.

So I'm all into theater and shit and I love rockin out on my guitar and I have girlfriends and sex and all that most of which would point to "not gay", but my OCD is still poking at me. "meewwzzicalz....meewwzicals...etc".

I fianlly met an actual gay dude when I am working at a reperatory theater in Philly for a summer (or near philly really). And I get roomed with the gay guy. And he is flaming. So I am wondering how did he know he was gay?? So I asked him and he said, "Ya know, this one guy asked me once if I thought he was gay because he couldn't figure out if he was or not. So I asked him, 'Have you ever slept with a man?' No. 'Have you ever wanted to sleep with a man?' No. And I said, well there's your answer. You get the "not gay sticker. So basically, I knew I was gay when I said, 'Honey I would love to suck Dicaprio's love stick anyday!!'"

That's when I knew. I knew I wasn't gay! I did not in any way shape or form want to suck Leonardo DiCaprio's penis!! This was the most awesome revelation ever!!! I could relax and enjoy a lifetime of sex with women free of the sneaking suspicion that, "I could conceivably be gay given my interests in some activities that are labeled as gay stivities, like musicals." I was free, except for the whole OCD and panic disorder thing which would and will plague me for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, "Am I gay?" was replaced with, "Is this food poisoned?!?!" Horribly enough, I'd take the poisoned OCD stuff anyday.

I have nothing against gay people. I was so concerned about the possibility of being gay because I KNEW that, that lifestyle is not easy. Everyone hates you before they even know you and AIDS is a real bad thing for a hypochondriach to have to deal with. Not that only gay people get AIDS but the chances go up a tad with the anal sex and whatnot.

Back to my unborn/unconceived child. So how do I prevent this from happening to my child? School is going to expose them to everything and you can't and shouldn't stop that, but the worlds labels are still going to be there. My solution, genetic modification. My son will have all the OCD and Anxiety Disorder and Hypochondria and all those pain in the ass mental disorders removed from his genome before he is even born. Then he won't worry about stupid shit like, "Am I Gay?" or "Did that donut lady have clean enough hands for me to rationalize eating this donut I just bought, or should I throw it out?" or "Oh god I think I've been stung by a bee, but I'm not sure...OMG..imgonnadie!!" or "Oops I just hit that orange kid with a bottle and I don't know why" or "How do you spell potatoe anyways?" I want to take all the mental fuckups out of his brain before his brain even forms.

Genetic modification is the key. I don't want to take the Gay out of him I want to take the worry out of him. If he's gay then he's gay. If he's not he's not. We all have roads that we must follow and choices of our own to make even if we are children. The best a parent can hope to do is instill good values and hope the kid doesn't do anything too stupid before he/she figures out that knowledge is an enjoyable thing. But I don't want to pass on the burden of the disorders and learning disabilities that I had to struggle through growing up. I turned out all right, but what if I didn't have these mental issues? I might very well be a starving artist trying to make my way as an actor in LA, instead of working a 9-5 that I am so bored at, I could shit nails.

I guess what it really comes down to is GATTACA. Great film. I highly reccomend.

For the record though, I love my girlfriend (someday fiancee someday wife) and I love my life right now. She really mekes it easier to enjoy life and enjoy growing older with her, even makes it worth looking forward to. I'm not gay and I never have been or will be, but I don't want my child to have to second guess himself on stupid shit like that. So genetic modification it is.

Maybe I'll make him a bit smarter or something too. College touition is going to be a bitch by the time he grows up and with the road I'm on he may have to rely on some fine scholarships!!!

A Basic Buddhism Guide: Essential Advice on Meditation

This is the best explanation on how to meditate that I have ever read. However, it still can be a bit hard to access. I wasn't quite sure what some of the things they said mean. What is the "soft spot"? How does one be spacious?

So here is a little summary in extreme laymen's terms-
Start off by just sitting and closing your eyes and letting thoughts just go in and out of your mind, don't focus on any particular one. That is to say, don't let any one particular thought take over. Say, for instance, you have the thought of "Oh I need to pay my bills" and then you just start thinking about paying your bills. If you see that happening, one thought taking over your meditation, try to let it go. If you can't let go of a thought and or are having trouble with your thoughts taking over and you need something to focus on, focus on your breathing...in and out...in and out...if thoughts occur to you while you're doing this just let them do their thing and keep on focusing on your breath. The key is not to focus on any particular thought. Don't even focus on ignoring your thoughts, just let them go through your head like those news updates at the bottom of the CNN screen. Thats it. Very Tza Zen if I do say so myself.

This is the easiest way I can comprehend meditation. Hope it helps.

Science vs Religion...Again

This article has really made me think. Wired 14.02: Buddha on the Brain

Who to side with? The scientists who protest the study of Buddhist monks in meditation, or the scientists who actually do the experiments? Some of science is based on faith, not in religion but in the faith that certain rules will always apply. If you run at a door, the rule is that you will hit it and bounce off. Howver, in theory, you could pass right through it, if your particles and the door's particles were all positioned in such a way that they just pass eachother by instead of bouncing off one another. At least so I have been told/read. I think the real problem here is how does one study the Buddhist monks in the state of meditation and measure effects of that meditation, without letting your own personal mental influences get in the way of scientific results. Having the Dali Lama come and speak at a science convention is a bit odd, although that's one convention I'd like to go to. But maybe its time that science studies religion. In that, science takes a look at certain aspects of religion/s to see what the heck is going on. But it all comes down to being scientifically objective. How does one do that AND study a religion or an aspect thereof and remain objective? The power of suggestion itself could skew results. The testing would have to be more than "Double Blind". And how do you create a control? There isn't really a placebo religion that scientifically should have no effect. Its quite a conundrum. And I have no answers.
